Itau-Unicef Award
At the end of 2011, the Broadening Horizons Project of the Institute for Local Integrated Development - Casa do Jardim received the Itau-Unicef Award, as 1 of 32 projects throughout Brazil that are making a significant contribution toward the improvement of the quality of education for children. Casa do Jardim was 1 of 4 finalists in the Belo Horizonte region.
In its 9th year, the 2011 Itau-Unicef Award, which is an initiative of the Itau Social Foundation and Unicef, had a record of 2,922 applications. 'Integral Education: experiences that transform', this year's theme, highlights the importance of increasing the opportunities for learning that go beyond the school environment.
The Broadening Horizons Project was created out of a need to increase access to quality education, culture and sport for children and adolescents in developing communities in Brazil. It is already being recognized as a means to reduce social inequalities and contribute to the country's economic development.
Today, the Project serves 72 children between 6 and 12 years, offering school support, capoeira, art and drama classes, sports and integrated events for families. The following three principles orient its work: endogenous valorization, mutually beneficial partnerships and coherence.
